Early 19th C. Dirk and Sgian
Early 19th C. Dirk and Sgian
Blade:
12" single edged blade of hand forged and clay hardened 1095 high carbon steel with ropework jimping on the spine, polished and etched to bring out the hamon, given a deep mustard patina, and honed to a fine edge.
Handle:
The handle is hand carved sycamore: the haunches have deeply carved panels of fine basketweave, while the shaft is covered in a heavier basketweave, and the pommel has a band of dirk knot braid. The carving is set with brass and copper pins at the interstices.
Mounts:
The pommel nut is sculpted brass and the guard and integral shoulder straps are forged and sculpted steel, as is the pommel plate. The dirk has an accompanying by-knife in 1095, sycamore and copper, housed in the front of the scabbard.
Sheath:
The blade is protected by a laminated millboard scabbard, covered with deerskin leather. The tip of the sheath is reinforced with a forged copper chape. The sheath has a belt loop attached with a copper bail and suspension ring.
Sgian Dubh:
This Dirk has a matching Sgian Dubh utilising the same techniques and materials.
